Now is a time for unity.

In this report, I want to give you an update on where we are in politics in the State of Texas.

I was proud to be the first state legislator to endorse Sen. Hillary Clinton for President, and I want to be one of the first legislators who supported her to say we need to unite behind Sen. Barack Obama and elect him as the next President of the United States.

Please look at the local races in your communities; at your legislative races. A lot of nominees won't have opponents in November but a lot of them will. We have a chance to take back the House of Representatives here in Texas. We're only five seats short.

Additionally, there are some Democrats who will be challenged and challenged hard, and we need to pull together behind these legislators and help them win re-election. Plus there are local races up and down the ballot.

It's vital that we unite as Democrats from one corner of this state to the other and let Texas know that we know the difference between the Democratic Party and the Republicans. We believe that people ought to have health care, safe communities and good education. And they ought to have a job that pays them well. The Republicans don't agree with us on that, and that's what separates us from them.

Finally, I want to put in a special plug for my good friend, Lt. Col. Rep. Rick Noriega, our nominee for the U.S. Senate. If we elect Rick Noriega, it will send a message to the entire country that Texas is ready to move forward to better things.

I urge everybody to get involved and help us form an army for change in Texas.
