The big news as the Legislative Session winds down has been the recent fight in the House of Representatives over the proposed Voter ID bill, pushed by the Republicans in the Senate and House.
We believe that bill is not a voter ID bill but a voter suppression bill designed to intimidate voters from exercising their right as Americans to pick who govern them. We feel it would turn back the clock to the days before the Voting Rights Act of 1964.
Democratic members of the House were determined not to let that bill come to the House floor, where the Republican majority could have enacted it, and resolved to do whatever it took within the rules of the House of Representatives to fight it, no matter how long it took.
Thankfully, we had enough support to stop that bill and as of today it will not become law.
Those of us who opposed this bill did so not because it was good for the Democratic Party or because it was bad for the Republican Party. We did it because we believe that when you do an injustice to one person or one group, in the end, it hurts all of us. And that's what this struggle was all about.
